Women's Work of the Revolution in Albany

Eighteenth century Albany was central to the outcome of the American Revolution, and women were central to how the Revolution played out in Albany and the wider northern department of New York that was so pivotal to the war's outcome.  In this talk, Dr. Maeve Kane (University at Albany) will discuss how white, Black, and Indigenous women in the Albany area played important roles as spies, diplomats, merchants, and community leaders during the pivotal years before, during, and after the Revolution.  Ideas about gender and womanhood shaped how all Americans conceived of what the new nation would be, and Albany women forever altered the course of the Revolution and the new nation.
