About this event

July 11th 3-5 PM:  RECEPTION & ARTIST TALK: Chasing history with a camera

The Town of Chester Public Library and the Friends of the Town of Chester Library are proud to announce their July exhibit will feature “Chasing History with a Camera” by Laura Seldman. Please join us for the exhibit reception on July 11th from 3 to 5 PM; the show will be up from July 2 to July 31st and may be seen during library hours. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m–1 p.m, closed on July 4th.

Blending artistic sensibility with historical inquiry, Seldman’s photographs capture timeless and familiar scenes of Adirondack life, including a series of nineteenth century one-room schoolhouses and a home Seldman newly researched and discovered to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad in Schroon Lake.

As a photo historian, Seldman documents local wonders and what remains of material culture through evocative imagery, so the viewer feels present in the remembered past. Her work centers on storied landscapes found along country roads, small towns, and remote waterways. Weighted with focus and respect, these photographs connect generations through place, memory, and meaning.

Firmly rooted in the tradition of documentary photography, Seldman is contributing to a visual archive with intentional imagery that is meant to engage, educate, and endure. These images add value to the community by uncovering its historical heritage and enlarging its legacy.

A lifelong Adirondacker, Seldman has exhibited in over 50 galleries and museums, and her work is held in permanent collections including the Banff Centre, DC Art Bank, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, and Blue Mountain Center. For more than 25 years, Seldman served as gallery manager and master printer for the feminist art collective P Street Paperworks, where she helped pioneer community-based exhibitions, fine art silkscreen collaborations, and visual activism.

Ms. Seldman is the author of several books.
